Alaska Scrapbook

After college in 1989 and 1990 I worked as a contract NOAA foreign and domestic fisheries observer in the northwest Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea in Alaska.  I don't believe they allow foreign fishing vessels anymore but I'm not sure. I was on a Korean mother ship off of the coast of California, Oregon and Washington, a Japanese mother ship in the Bering Sea, an American fishing and processing ship in the Bering Sea and three long line vessels in the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska. I feel blessed to have seen pod after pod of killer whales. I've been close enough to humpback whales to see their eyes staring back at me.  Sperm whales came within 20 feet of the ship.  I saw many pelagic species of birds and saw scores of bald eagles. I've had northern fur seals come to the edge of the long liner. If you have seen the Discovery channel's "World's Deadliest Catch" than you know how rough the Bering Sea is. The show features crab boats and I was not on a crab boat so my experience is different but I was on boats as short as 60 feet which were definitely NOT comfortable! I'm really glad to have lived through the experiences that I had. Alaska is everything you hear about and more. I always tell people that you MUST see Alaska before you die. I only regret I do not have better pictures of this magnificent place on this page!

Gorgeous views while at sea!

The boat below was in Seward. There are always a lot of birds following the boats.

Killer whales are abundant in the Bering Sea. I feel blessed to have seen them so close.

Homer has hundreds of Bald eagles on the spit. These are immature eagles.

That was one big tangled mess aboard the long liner!

Portage Glacier, on the left, was totally awesome! The "rock" is located in the Bering Sea on the edge of Dutch Harbor.

Katchemak Bay in Homer, on the right, was just gorgeous! The photo was taken at 11 PM in April.

This northern fur seal was a real cutie! He came right up to the long liner.

He was dining on the fish caught on the hooks below the water.

The sunsets at sea in Alaska were the most spectacular I have ever seen!

This sperm whale was so fun to watch. I couldn't believe how large it was!

The scenery is part of what makes Alaska the special place that is!

I hope that you enjoyed the pictures of Alaska!
